BASEBALL
WRAP-UP
April 29, 1996
The Patriots had another solid week as they won five of six games, including two of three at Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison over the weekend. George Mason defeated Liberty 13-5 Tuesday at home, Maryland-Baltimore County 28-23 Wednesday on the road and Howard 14-4 Thursday at home before travelling to Harrisonburg. The Patriots split Saturday's doubleheader with James Madison, losing the first game 13-12 and winning the second 8-5, and defeated the Dukes Sunday 7-3 to improve to 24-23 overall, 12-6 in the CAA.
George Mason remains in first place in the CAA, a half-game in front of Old Dominion (11-6). East Carolina is third (9-6), Richmond fourth (10-7), Virginia Commonwealth fifth (8-7), James Madison and UNC Wilmington sixth (9-11) and William & Mary eighth (2-16).
Sophomore Mike Colangelo (Hylton HS) was 3-5 and drove in five runs to lead the Patriots to victory over Liberty Tuesday. Colangelo singled to drive in George Mason's first run in the bottom of the first inning, then hit a two-run single to give the Patriots a 7-2 lead at the end of four innings. He later capped George Mason's five-run eighth inning with a two-run home run. Senior right-hander Danny Schourek (Marshall HS) earned his first victory with the Patriots as he improved to 1-1.
The Patriots broke their school record for runs in Wednesday's wild affair at UMBC, surpassing the mark of 25 they set in victories over the University of the District of Columbia (25-1 in 1981, 25-0 in 1982) and over Coppin State (25-4 on April 11, 1996). The Patriots had 26 hits, with each starter having at least two. Sophomore Trey Mosgovoy led the way with four hits and added three runs batted in, while Colangelo, senior Jay Burkhart, sophomore Lee Kansteiner (Robinson HS), junior Adam Virant and senior Brad Midgett all hit home runs. Junior right-hander Mickey Maestas (2-2) gained the victory, while junior right-hander Drew Johnson picked up his first collegiate save.
George Mason took advantage of 11 hits and 15 walks issued by Howard pitchers to defeat the Bison Thursday. The Patriots broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to take a 6-1 lead as Burkhart drove in two runs with a double. George Mason put the game away in the sixth as it sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs, then Kansteiner tripled to drive in two runs in a three-run seventh as the Patriots took a 14-1 lead. Sophomore right-hander Scott Lavender (2-3) pitched seven strong innings, allowing two hits while walking two and striking out seven.
The Patriots just missed an opportunity for a sweep over the weekend as James Madison rallied from a 9-3 deficit in the fifth inning to win Saturday's first game. Burkhart hit a three-run homer, his seventh three-run blast of the season, in the first inning, and Virant hit a two-run homer in the third to stake George Mason to the big lead, then Kansteiner hit a two-run blast in the sixth to make the score 11-7. But the Dukes came back strong and plated the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth to tag Johnson with the loss in relief of junior left-handed starter John Fulcher (Stonewall Jackson HS).
Sophomore right-hander Shawn Camp (Robinson HS) stopped the bleeding in the second game as he pitched his third complete game in five starts this season. Camp allowed just five hits, but he set a George Mason record by hitting five batters, which is just one short of the NCAA record held by Hartford's Aaron Taylor in a game vs. Siena in 1995. Camp improved to 5-0 as he struck out Macey Brooks with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh for his eighth strikeout of the game.
Sophomore right-hander Tom McGinn (Lake Braddock HS) capped the weekend as he pitched his second straight complete game on Sunday. McGinn (4-4) allowed nine hits, walked five and struck out seven, while Burkhart and Midgett each hit two-run homers to supply the offense.
Colangelo leads the team in batting at .386 and paces the CAA with six triples. Junior Rick Visconti is hitting .331, while Virant is at .319. Burkhart leads the Patriots with 12 home runs and 51 RBI.
George Mason hosts Maryland Wednesday at 3 p.m. and travels to George Washington Thursday at 3 p.m. The Patriots conclude their CAA regular season this weekend as they meet Virginia Commonwealth at The Diamond in Richmond, with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. and Sunday's game starting at 1 p.m.
