The Patriots won two of three games last week as they opened their home schedule at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field. George Mason defeated Holy Cross Thursday, 34-1, then split a doubleheader with C.W. Post Saturday, winning the first game, 5-1, before falling in the second, 5-4, to leave its overall record at 6-3.
On Thursday, the Patriots set school records for runs (34), hits (28) and runs batted in (28) as they routed Holy Cross, breaking the marks set April 24, 1996, as George Mason had 28 runs, 26 hits and 25 RBI in a 28-23 victory at Maryland-Baltimore County. Junior Trey Mosgovoy tied a school record with six RBI and added two home runs (his second two-homer game of the season).
George Mason broke the game wide open with 12 runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 17-0 lead. Sophomore Trevor Haas (South Lakes HS) had two hits and four RBI as the Patriots sent 17 batters to the plate. Others with two hits in the inning were senior J.K. Ronay (Robinson HS) and junior Chris Martine. Each of George Mason's nine starters had at least one hit, and 13 Patriots hit safely in the game. Haas, Ronay, Mosgovoy, Martine, sophomore Scott Morrison and freshman Chuck Freeman (Fairfax HS) each had three hits to lead the offense, while on the other side, junior Tom McGinn (Lake Braddock HS) improved to 2-1 as he pitched a masterful game, allowing just one hit (a leadoff home run in the fifth inning) and tying his career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings.
Haas continued to swing a hot bat Saturday as he hit two home runs, the first of his collegiate career, and drove in three runs as the Patriots defeated C.W. Post in the first game of the doubleheader. Senior Scott Lavender improved to 2-0 as he allowed three hits, walked one and struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings.
The Patriots carried a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh and final inning in the second game, but the Pioneers managed a three-run rally against junior closer Chris Aronson (0-1) to pull out the victory. Haas again led the offense with two hits.
Morrison leads George Mason with a .529 average and has eight RBI, while junior Mike Colangelo (Hylton HS) is batting .448 with team-leading totals of three triples and 12 RBI. Freeman is batting .400, Ronay checks in at .394 and Haas is batting .359 with nine RBI and paces the club with six stolen bases. Mosgovoy is hitting .310 with four home runs and 11 RBI. On the mound, junior Shawn Camp (Robinson HS) is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA and he is tied with McGinn (4.20 ERA) for the team lead with 19 strikeouts.
The Patriots take to the road during "Spring Break" this week. George Mason travels to Liberty Monday for a 3 p.m. contest, then meets North Carolina State in Raleigh Tuesday and Wednesday at 2 p.m. before heading back north to face Virginia Tech Thursday at 3 p.m. The Patriots cap the week by opening their Colonial Athletic Association schedule with three games against Virginia Commonwealth at The Diamond in Richmond, with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
