Junior center fielder Mike Colangelo was a first-team selection and sophomore second baseman Trevor Haas received honorable mention as the 1997 Virginia Division I All-State baseball team was announced today.
Virginia Tech head coach Chuck Hartman, who led the Hokies to the Atlantic 10 Conference championship and a NCAA Tournament regional berth, was named the Virginia "Coach of the Year." Richmond senior first baseman Matt Pusey, who batted .401 and led the Colonial Athletic Association with 24 doubles and 84 runs batted in while adding 15 home runs, was selected as the state's "Player of the Year."
Colangelo, a 6-0, 190-pound native of Dumfries, VA, and a 1994 graduate of C.D. Hylton High School, moves up from being an honorable mention selection last season. A first-team All-CAA choice and a second-team All-East Region pick, he led the CAA with a .418 batting average and paced the conference for the second straight year with seven triples, and he ranked second in the league with 68 RBI. He was selected in the 21st round by the Anaheim Angels earlier this week in the 1997 amateur baseball draft.
Colangelo was ranked tied for 11th in the nation in mid-May with an average of 0.15 triples per game. He led the Patriots in batting, triples, RBI, runs (62), hits (77), doubles (18), stolen bases (14), slugging percentage (.707) and on-base percentage (.536), and he ranked second on the team with seven home runs. Colangelo's season on-base percentage, his career mark of .477 and his 14 career triples are George Mason school records
Haas, a 5-8, 170-pound native of Reston, VA, and a 1994 graduate of South Lakes High School, also was a first-team All-CAA selection. He ranked third on the Patriots with a .363 batting average and added nine doubles, five homers, 31 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Haas was the only Patriot to start every game until he broke a bone in his right hand sliding into third base against George Washington May 3, which caused him to miss the remainder of the season.
George Mason finished the 1997 season with an overall record of 29-24, 10-11 in the CAA.
