COLANGELO, HAAS
NAMED ALL-CAA

Junior center fielder Mike Colangelo and sophomore second baseman Trevor Haas each were selected to the All-Colonial Athletic Association baseball first team. The selections, voted on by the conference's nine head coaches, were announced at the annual award banquet at King's Restaurant here Monday.

Virginia Commonwealth head coach Paul Keyes, who led the Rams to their first CAA regular season title in their second year in the conference, was named the CAA "Coach of the Year." Old Dominion junior third baseman/pitcher Ron Walker, who led the league in home runs and was second in saves, was chosen as the league's "Player of the Year," while William & Mary freshman catcher Brian Rogers was selected as the CAA "Rookie of the Year."

Colangelo, a 6-0, 190-pound native of Dumfries, VA, and a 1994 graduate of C.D. Hylton High School, moves up to the first team after being a second-team selection last season. He led the CAA for the second straight year with seven triples and ranked second in the league with a .415 batting average and 66 runs batted in. Colangelo was ranked tied for 11th in the nation last week with an average of 0.15 triples per game, and his 14 career triples are a George Mason school record. He leads the Patriots in batting, triples, RBI, runs (59), hits (73), doubles (17), stolen bases (14), slugging percentage (.710) and on-base percentage (.531), and he ranks second on the team with seven home runs.

Haas, a 5-8, 170-pound native of Reston, VA, and a 1994 graduate of South Lakes High School, ranked third on the Patriots with a .363 batting average and added nine doubles, five homers, 31 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Haas was the only Patriot to start every game until he broke a bone in his right hand sliding into third base against George Washington May 3. He will miss the CAA Tournament, but could return for action if the Patriots win the conference title and advance to NCAA regional play.

Colangelo and Haas are the first George Mason players to be selected to the All-CAA first team since Lonnie Goldberg and Greg Deares were first-team picks in 1993.

With its 10-11 mark in the CAA, George Mason will be the fourth seed in this week's CAA Tournament at Grainger Stadium here in Kinston. The Patriots will meet fifth-seeded East Carolina (26-25, 10-11) at 7:30 p.m. in Tuesday's first round of play. Other first-round matchups include third-seeded James Madison against No. 6 William & Mary at 9 a.m., No. 2 Old Dominion against seventh-seeded Richmond at 12:30 p.m., and top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth against No. 8 UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m. The tournament concludes with the championship game Saturday.
