MEN'S BASKETBALL
WRAP-UP
January 7, 1996

The George Mason men's basketball team split a two-game Colonial Athletic Association road trip, defeating the University of North Carolina Wilmington, 63-59, before bowing at East Carolina, 80-74, on Monday. The Patriots are 7-5 overall, 1-2 in the CAA.

Senior guard Nate Langley scored 19 of his game high 24 points in the second half to pace the win in Wilmington, NC. It was the Patriots first victory at UNCW since 1990 and broke a seven-game losing streak to the Seahawks. Langley hit eight of 15 field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers, and six of 10 free throws. Senior forward George Redd, freshman guard Ahmad Dorsett and senior guard Contrell Scott each chipped in eight points while sophomore center Nik Mirch grabbed a game high eight rebounds.

The Patriots connected on 46.9 percent from the field (23 of 49), including 58.3 percent in the second half when they hit on 14 of 24 from the floor. Keith Spencer led UNCW with 16 points and Bill Mayhew added 13.

Langley scored a team high 19 points at East Carolina but struggled from the field, making just six of 23 shots. Redd added 17 points and nine rebounds while Scott scored 10 points. Mirich tied his career high with 12 rebounds.

Hot shooting East Carolina made 12 of 21 3-point field goals. Tim Basham buried seven of nine from behind the arc in scoring a game high 23 points as the Pirates raised their mark to 10-2 overall, 3-0 in the CAA.

The Pirates owned a 44-37 rebounding edge.

George Mason played both games without junior guard Demetrius Somerville, the team's second leading scorer (12.6) and top outside threat (31 3-pointers). Somerville was lost for the season after suffering a fractured right tibia in a game against Virginia Commonwealth on Jan. 2.

George Mason hosts Old Dominion on Wed., Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Patriot Center.
