Junior center fielder Mike Colangelo of the baseball team has been selected as the Connection Newspapers/George Mason University Athlete of the Week.
Colangelo, a native of Dumfries, VA, and a 1994 graduate of C.D. Hylton High School, had an outstanding week as helped lead George Mason to three victories as it concluded its regular season. The Patriots defeated UMBC, 13-8, and swept a doubleheader from Coppin State, 5-0 and 12-7, to finish with an overall record of 29-22 as they head into the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament this week in Kinston, NC.
Colangelo, who was tied for 11th in the nation last week with an average of 0.15 triples per game, continued to swing a hot bat as the regular season drew to a close as he batted .636 (7-11) in the three games last week with seven runs batted in. Against UMBC, he was 2-5 at the plate with four RBI, driving in three with a massive drive to left for his seventh home run in the sixth inning. Colangelo was 2-3 with a RBI in the first game against Coppin State, and he finished the weekend strong with a 3-3 effort with two RBI in the second game against the Eagles.

He leads the CAA in triples and ranks second in both batting average and RBI. His 14 career triples are a school record.
