Sabrina Segal has been selected as the Connection Newspapers/ George Mason Athlete of the Week. She is the second women’s tennis player to be so honored this school year. Anne-Katja Mange was named athlete of the week on October 21, 1996.
Segal, a transfer from the University of Houston, posted a 2-2 record last week as the Patriots finished eighth at the CAA Championships in Norfolk, VA. The junior finished her inaugural year in the green and gold with a 15-6 overall record, and a 12-4 mark this spring. Segal posted a team-high seven-match winning streak while competing at No. 2 singles, and finished the season winning eight of her last 10 matches. In her 12 wins this spring, Segal was extended to a third set only once. The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, native also posted a 4-3 record during her Colonial Athletic Association play.
In doubles, Segal played with Mange the entire year as the duo posted an 8-6 record, as well as a 5-5 mark this spring at No. 1 doubles. The duo posted a five-match winning streak this spring during the middle of the season to spark the Patriots. In the fall, Segal and Mange captured their flight title at the DC Metro Invitational at Georgetown University.
Segal, a psychology major, was ranked No. 10 in the Under-16 field as a junior player in Canada, and received the same ranking in the Under-18 Canadian field. During her senior year, she was ranked No. 32 overall in Canada.
The women’s tennis team posted a 7-9 record this spring, and finished 1-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
