Freshman Laura Murawski of the George Mason women's lacrosse team has been named this week's Connection Newspapers/George Mason Athlete of the Week.
The 5-2 attacker led the Patriots to two wins last week and had career-high performances in both matches. Murawski (Yorktown Heights, NY, Yorktown High School) leads George Mason offensively with a team high 14 goals and 13 assists (27 points). She also ranks among the top five scorers in the Colonial Athletic Association.
With her 13 assists, she already ranks No. 2 on the all-time records list for most assists in a season. She needs just five more to move into first place ahead of Aimee Willard who set the record for most assists in a season last year with 18.
On Wednesday, Murawski led the Patriots past Stanford, 16-5, as she scored four goals and had two assists while not committing a turnover.
On Saturday, she had a career-high three assists and also added a score as the Patriots defeated Richmond, 9-4. Those three assists tie a George Mason record for most assists in a game. Murawski had 11 ground ball's in the match, also a career-high and a season high for a Patriot player this season.
Murawski also excels in the classroom as she earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll in her first semester at George Mason with a 3.375 GPA in the fall.
Last season, as a senior at Yorktown High School, Murawski was an honorable mention all-american scoring 107 goals and 36 assists. She led her squad to a State Championship while earning all-tournament team honors. She finished her career with 229 points (178 goals, 75 assists) in three seasons.
Murawski has led George Mason in scoring in four of its seven matches, and has helped the Patriots to a 3-4 overall record and a 2-2 record in the CAA, already more conference wins than in any other season previously.
George Mason hosts Georgetown on Wednesday at 3:30 pm at the George Mason Stadium. On Saturday the Patriots travel to Virginia Tech for a 1:00 pm match in Blacksburg, VA.
