GEORGE MASON ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Mike Duckworth

March 24, 1997

Fresh off a week where he was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Player of the Week, Mike Duckworth continued his hard-hitting ways.

On Friday against EIVA foe St. Francis, Duckworth registered nine kills to help lead his team to a three-game victory. At the time, that was the team's seventh win in its past eight outings.

But it was on Sunday where his tenacity really surfaced.

Knowing that he needed just 11 kills to go over the 1,000-kill mark for a career, Duckworth showed up for 23 kills, to lead the next highest Patriot by nine. Despite his team dropping a four-game match to Rutgers-Newark, Duckworth's effort, which also included two service aces, three digs and five blocks, helped keep the Patriots close. In the end, a tired Duckworth was pleased with his overall effort, which included a .390 hitting percentage.

Duckworth's 23 kills in a game was more than he had in any match the week before when he was named the EIVA Player of the Week. He accomplished that feat off the strength of his hitting percentages, which included being named the Killer Loop-Kill Average Leader at the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino, CA. He was named the tournament standout off his .547 kill average, but he also averaged 4.67 kills per game, hit .475, served seven aces, dug 29 balls, and added 0.3 blocks per game in the four-game tourney.

Duckworth is a 6-5 junior outside hitter from Virginia Beach, VA.
