Senior Olga Matejickova of the George Mason women's volleyball team has been named this week's George Mason "Athlete of the Week."
The 6-1 middle blocker/outside hitter was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Player of the Year on Thursday at the CAA volleyball banquet. She was a two-time CAA Player of the Week selection this season and was ranked in the top three in four different statistical categories in the conference.
"Olga is probably the best all-around player we've ever had here at Mason," said head coach Pat Kendrick. "I'm just sorry we only had her for two years!"
Over the weekend, Matejickova a native of Prague, Czech Republic, led the Patriots back to their sixth straight appearance in the CAA Championship match. George Mason lost in the finals to American, but Matejickova had an outstanding all-around performance.
She finished with a career-high 35 kills, while hitting .446. The 35 kills rank third (tie for third) in the George Mason record books for most kills in a match. She also had 15 digs, five total blocks and she tied a career-high with six service aces.
The Patriots defeated UNC Wilmington and James Madison to advance to the Championship. Against UNCW, Matejickova had a team high 12 kills and 10 digs. Against JMU she recorded 12 kills, 14 digs and had five total blocks.
In two seasons with George Mason Matejickova has 800 kills, almost 700 digs, over 200 blocks and over 100 aces. She is a two-time first team All-CAA honoree and was a first team All-District 3 and first team All-Virginia (VaSID) as a junior.
This season Matejickova led the Patriots in kills (534), hitting percentage (.338), service aces (67) and digs (377). Her 534 kills is the fourth most kills in a season in Patriot history.
