Anne-Katja Mange of the George Mason womens tennis team has been named the Connection Newspapers/George Mason University Player of the Week.
Over the weekend, the 5-9 sophomore from Satigny, Switzerland, won her flights singles championship at the Washington and Lee Womens Tennis Fall Tournament, in Lexington, VA.
Mange, playing in the number one position for George Mason, is off to a blazing start in this fall season. With three wins last weekend en route to the championship title, Mange has an overall singles record of 10-3.
In the first round of the W&L Tournament, she received a bye, and then defeated Mary Celeste Foster from W&L, 6-1, 6-0. Mange won the semi-final round defeating Lindsey Gastright 6-4, 6-2 and then won the championship downing Safaa Najdi from Radford, 6-4, 6-4.
Mange also plays in the number one doubles position for the Patriots and has a 7-1 record thus far. She, along with partner Bobbi Lee, won their flights doubles championships as well. Mange and Lee defeated teams from W&L and Radford to win with title. Mange and then-partner, Sabrina Segal (who is currently injured) won three matches at the DC Metro Womens Championships to claim that title.
Mange was the only Patriot player to advance in the pre-qualifying rounds of the ITA Clay Court Championships held in Baltimore, MD. Mange won three pre-qualifying matches in the single-elimination tournamant before being beaten by Sandra Fischer of Colorado. In the first tournament this season at the JMU Fall Kick Off Tournament, Mange placed fifth in the consolation bracket.
In her first season with George Mason, Mange had a 10-8 record in the fall season and a 5-6 overall record in the spring.
Mange has played in the finals of the Switzerland National Junior
