Sophomore Trish Halpin of the George Mason women's basketball team has been named the Athlete of the Week.
The 6-3 forward from Springfield, PA, (Cardinal O'Hara HS) had three solid games for the Patriots, helping them to a perfect 3-0 record last week.
Halpin averaged 9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in the three wins last week. She's currently leading the Patriots in rebounds at 6.5 per game, as well as blocked shots with 2.0 per game. She's led George Mason in rebounding in eight of the 11 games this season.
Halpin ranks second in the Colonial Athletic Association in blocks and is among the league leaders in rebounding. As a freshman, Halpin finished fourth in the CAA in blocks averaging 1.5 per game.
With her 22 blocks this season she now has 62 career blocks and already ranks sixth on the all-time blocked shot leaders list. The Patriot leader is Valerie Douglas (1981-85) who had 136 blocks during her stint at George Mason. Halpin is on pace to break the 13 year old record. She tied her career-high of five blocked shots last week against UMES. She also had a career-high 11 rebounds in the win.
Twice this season Halpin has scored in double figures and vs. Seton Hall she had a career best 13 points.
Halpin has also excelled in the classroom. In the fall she earned a 3.0, and last year in just her first at George Mason, she had a 3.13 cumulative GPA, and was on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Halpin and the Patriots are 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. George Mason travels to Norfolk, VA, on Friday for a 7:35 pm game against second-ranked and undefeated (10-0) Old Dominion.
